Tummy Tuck and Liposuction: What’s the Difference?

Are you looking to achieve a flatter stomach with some more shape to it? If so, you may be able to improve your abdomen appearance with a tummy tuck or liposuction. Though they seem similar, both procedures have fundamental differences which may make one a better option for you than the other.

Also referred to as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck is meant to get rid of any excess skin from the abdomen area. This excess skin often occurs after pregnancy or significant weight loss and may not disappear despite following a proper diet and exercise. Tummy tucks are either partial or full, but both procedures are done using general anesthesia. Sagging skin along with excess fat is removed and there may be a tightening of the abdominal muscles. This procedure can also help with removing stretch marks or old scars.

A tummy tuck procedure may require several hours as well as spending a couple of days in the hospital following the procedure. Healing can take a couple of weeks before a person can resume their daily activities in full such as exercising.

Liposuction also improves the appearance of the abdomen but is meant to remove fatty tissue in certain areas. It focuses on getting rid of excess stubborn fat from the abdomen as well as other parts of the body such as the butt, arms, legs, or a person’s love handles. However, liposuction will not get rid of extra skin, stretch marks, or issues caused by abdominal muscles that may be loose.

Compared to a tummy tuck, liposuction is far less invasive than a tummy tuck, which involves scarring, general anesthesia, and long recovery times.
